Local businesses gear up for Mud Hens reopening

TOLEDO, OH (WTVG) – With 10 days left until Mud Hens opens, preparations are in full swing in downtown Toledo.

“It’s the start of summer,” said Mud Hens fan Hayley McRitchie, “the environment and the stadium are electrifying, and I think it’s better than most Major League baseball games.”

Lifetime Mud Hens fan Chad Stivers shares similar sentiments.

“We are very excited, it is always fun here, and the city is worried, and they are closing the streets. I’m looking forward to it,” Stevens said.

Several businesses told 13abc that opening day is the busiest day of the year.

“This is a project, we have to load beer, alcohol, food, all of our supplies because there is a certain influx,” said Ye Olde Dirty Burd CEO and co-owner Julie Ketterman.

With a Walleye game following a Mud Hens game, it’s hard not to hit a home run with the fans.

“We expect it to be a little more because it’s a Friday and also a Walleye game. It’s new, it’s a double header. You have dirty chickens at four, and Sudak at seven. It doesn’t happen all the time,” Ketterman said.

Packo’s at the Park is no stranger to opening day celebrations. The Packo’s brand has been part of the Toledo landscape for 90 years. After three years of the COVID pandemic, they are looking forward to the biggest year yet.

“We have a special cocktail menu in the making and some other specials that will be released on opening day only, so we’re really excited about that,” said Senior Manager Casey Werley.

A celebration of this magnitude was planned eight weeks in advance.

“We’ve brought in staff from a lot of different stores and talked to the staff we have; we were loading. I guess we’ll have eight or nine managers in the store to make sure everyone has fun and everything runs smoothly,” said Wheerley.

Ye Olde Dirty Burd celebrated 11 days of opening in downtown Toledo, but Ketterman told 13abc that every year is different.

“I mean, we start talking about it months before, but when you get to a couple of weeks, it gets more and more intense and the week gets crazy,” Ketterman said.

Fifth Third Field’s opening day is March 31st. The first innings against the St. Paul Saints will take place at 16:05.
