Five hospitalized after police chase ends with Mt. Helsey crash

MT. HEALTHY, Ohio (WXIX). Five people, including several minors, are hospitalized right now after a police chase ended in a crash early Wednesday morning, Hamilton County dispatchers said.

The chase passed through several communities before the fleeing car crashed on Hamilton Avenue near the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway around 1:23 am.

It all started about 10 minutes ago when someone called 911 and said they saw suspicious people who may have been breaking into cars in the 2400 block of Walden Glen Circle.

The 911 caller gave a good description of the car that saw it leaving the area, a silver Kia, FOX19 NOW dispatchers say.

Springfield Twp officers spotted a Kia driving down Hamilton Avenue, confirmed it was stolen and attempted to stop it, but the driver sped up and started chasing, according to the dispatcher.

Officers threw so-called “stop sticks” on Hamilton Avenue near Meredith Drive to try and deflate a fleeing car’s tires to stop it, but the tactic didn’t work, dispatchers say.

The Kia kept running but crashed on Mount Helsey a few minutes later.

One person inside was trapped, while two jumped out and ran to neighboring apartments, but were detained without further incident, according to dispatchers.

All five people in the car, including minors, were taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital.

Police say they have minor injuries.

None of the officers were hurt.

At least one Springfield Township employee is in the hospital and is still investigating.

Charges are expected, but it is not yet clear how many people will be arrested.

Springfield Township Police have not yet responded to requests for an update.

FOX19 NOW will continue to try to contact them and update this story throughout the morning.
