Hall of Heroes robbed, damaged

March 20 – ELKHART. Early Sunday morning, the Hall of Heroes museum was broken into and early Marvel comics were stolen.

Principal Allen Stewart wrote on a GoFundMe page where he is trying to raise $60,000: “We damaged our door and display cases that we just added as part of our renovation. Worst of all, the story was stolen.”

About 50 comic books were stolen – all early key Marvel comics, including Captain America #1 and Young Allies #1, Hulk #1 and #2, X-Men #1 and #2, ” Tales of Suspense”. #39, 1st Iron Man and more.

“We are heartbroken and sick that someone broke into our non-profit museum and stole this valuable history we have dedicated to preserving and spreading,” Stewart wrote. “Unfortunately, we did not have insurance for these rare items and cannot afford to replace them. We are asking for help to allow us to make amends and try to replace some of the stolen items from our collection.”

Elkhart Police said in a press release that at 2:22 a.m., an officer was called to the Hall of Heroes due to a back door alarm.

The officer noticed that a window had been smashed at the door on the south side of the building, and the rear doors appeared to have been forced open (this happened at approximately 2:03 am that day).

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Officers arrived at the scene in their K9 to help clean up the building. After clearing the building, officers found several destroyed display cases of superhero memorabilia with the contents missing, including several comic books.

No arrests have been made at this time and the case remains under investigation, the report said.

The officers who first responded learned that several thousand dollars worth of comic books had been stolen during the burglary. This is in addition to damage to the door and shop windows. The exact dollar amount for what was stolen has not yet been determined, police said.
