Wyoming governor signs bill to ban abortion pills

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon signed into law Friday night a bill banning abortion pills in the state and also allowed a separate measure restricting abortion to become law without his signature.

In a statement, Gordon expressed concern that the latest legislation, dubbed Life Is a Human Rights Act, would result in a lawsuit that would “delay any decision on the constitutionality of Wyoming’s abortion ban.”

He noted that earlier in the day, plaintiffs in an ongoing lawsuit filed a protest against the new law in case it did not veto it.

“I believe this issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible so that the issue of abortion in Wyoming can be finally resolved, and this is best done through a vote of the people,” said Republican Gordon. statement.

ban on abortion pillswhich was approved by the state legislature earlier this month, prohibits the prescribing, distributing, selling, or using “any drug for the purpose of inducing or inducing an abortion in any person.”

He makes exceptions for rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger.

Under the text of the bill, doctors who break the law can be charged with a misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a fine of up to $9,000.

The ban will take effect July 1.

It comes after a federal judge in Texas on Wednesday heard arguments in a lawsuit that could determine whether the Food and Drug Administration will have to revoke its decade-long approval of mifepristone, an abortion drug.
