Wyoming Gov. Gordon greenlights sweeping anti-abortion bill and signs ban on abortion pills

March 18 (UPI) — Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon allowed a sweeping anti-abortion measure passed by the state legislature to become law without his signature and also signed a ban on abortion pills.

At the same time, on Friday, Gordon expressed concern that the state Life is a human rights law will lead to legal battles that could delay a final decision on the status of abortion in Wyoming.

“If the legislature wants to directly decide how the Wyoming Constitution treats abortion and defines health care, then these issues must be tested in the amendment process set out in section 20 of the Wyoming Constitution and voted on directly by the people.” Gordon said.

Separately, the governor signed a less expansive law prohibition of medical abortioncommonly known as the “abortion pill”, except in cases of rape or incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger.

new law makes “illegal the prescribing, dispensing, distributing, selling, or using any drug for the purpose of obtaining or performing an abortion,” but does not criminalize the people who will take the drug.

An earlier version of the Life If Human Rights Act did not have exceptions for cases of rape and incest that could trigger litigation.

The new version includes exceptions for rape, incest, and cases where the life of the mother is in danger.

“Governor Gordon’s decision to sign these bills is disappointing, but the fight for abortion rights in Wyoming is not over,” the American Civil Liberties Union spokesman for Wyoming said. said on twitter. “We will continue to fight attempts that are contrary to our right to make our own reproductive health decisions.”
