Winter weather cancels flights to Texas and Colorado as storm moves east

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines on Monday canceled dozens of flights in northern Texas, where cold and wet weather is expected for most of the week, including the possibility of freezing rain.

About 30% of all flights at Southwest’s Dallas Love Field airport were canceled by noon, according to FlightAware tracking service. At the nearby American-dominated Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, almost 15% of flights were cancelled.

Dozens more flights were canceled in Denver and Austin, Texas. Nearly 800 flights have been canceled across the country and more than 2,000 others have been delayed.

According to FlightAware, Southwest has cut more than 330 flights, or about 8% of its entire schedule, while American has cut almost 180 flights, or 5% of its schedule.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for parts of northern Texas starting Monday at noon.

High temperatures are expected to remain in the 30s (-1.1 Celsius) until Thursday.

Outside of Texas, ice could build up in neighboring Oklahoma and Arkansas and extend east into the Deep South and Midwest this week, forecasters said.
