January 30 (UPI) — Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va., reopens Monday for the first time since a 6-year-old student brought a gun to school and shot and killed a teacher in class.

Students are given transparent book bags and all visitors go through a single entrance, and some items are also subjected to a metal detector. The Newport News Public Schools said in a statement.

Parents who decide to take their children to class will also be searched.

On Monday, the school board confirmed that therapists and social workers had arrived at the scene. The classroom where the shooting occurred will remain locked.

This comes less than a week after the board voted to end its relationship with Superintendent George Parker III. Hours before the 5–1 vote, the injured teacher’s lawyer, Abby Zwerner, told reporters that on the day of the shooting, school officials were repeatedly warned that the student was carrying a gun.

Principal Briana Foster Newton has been moved to another position in the district, the school board confirmed.

Zwerner, 25, was critically injured in front of a class of 20 students after she was hit by a single shot from a 9mm Taurus pistol on January 6. The name of the 6-year-old boy who allegedly shot her has not been released. . Through a lawyer, his parents said the gun was safely stored in their home.

At a press conference last week, attorney Diane Toscano called the shooting “completely preventable.”

The local police confirmed no school resource officer was assigned to school on Monday. However, in addition to the new metal detectors, the board has deployed a couple of school department security personnel to the school.

Doors have been installed in all classrooms where there were none before.
