Video shows teen gang beating boy, stealing his sneakers in NYC
Video posted on social media shows a gang of teenagers swarming a 15-year-old boy on a Manhattan street, beating him and running off with his sneakers.
The group of five boys were captured on camera repeatedly punching and kicking the victim at the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and West 188th Street Monday at around 2:25 p.m., according to police.
The teen was left lying motionless — and shoeless — on the sidewalk, the disturbing footage shows.
The brutal beatdown appears to have been caught on video by a passing driver, who can be heard commenting “Damn they’re taking his shoes, bro.”
“Yo. what the f–k?” the man says on the recording, posted on Instagram by the account Krudplug.
The teen attackers can be seen running to a nearby parked, black sedan and taking off after the melee. Another teenager walks over and checks the victim’s injuries.
The crime was reported to the NYPD, cops said.
“It was reported to police that a 15-year-old was assaulted by a group of individuals who forcefully removed his property,” police said in a statement. “The victim sustained injuries to his face and body.”
There were no immediate arrests.
Joseph Giacalone, a former NYPD sergeant who is a professor at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said the beatdown is a good example of a case where there is little that can be done in the current criminal justice climate.
“Here’s the problem with this one, you have a gang assault which is a bail eligible offense, and you have kids that are under the age of 18,” Giacalone said. “So there is just basically nothing you can do to these kids.”
