Video shows sparks and flames long before Ohio train crash

The stunning video raises questions among residents of East Palestine, Ohio, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

Video showing the train 20 miles before it reached the point where it derailed raises questions about when the crew became aware of the problem.

The video, obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, was filmed by a security camera at a hardware plant in Salem, Ohio. What appear to be sparks and flames can be seen in the video below one of the train cars as it passes the factory. The National Transportation Safety Board referenced the video at a press conference last week.

“We have received two videos that show preliminary signs of mechanical problems on one of the car’s axles,” said Michael Graham, a member of the NTSB.

This second video was taken from a processing plant in Salem, a mile down the highway. In front of this plant is a hot box detector that scans the temperature of the axles as the train passes and sounds an alarm if they overheat.

“The crew did receive an alarm from a roadside detector shortly before the derailment, indicating a mechanical problem,” Graham said. “Then emergency braking is initiated.”

NTBS says there was a warning, but it is not known if it came from a hot cell detector in Salem or from the next 20 miles in East Palestine.

And if the alarm didn’t go off when the train passed Salem, why not? CBS Pittsburgh reached out to Scott Wilcox, a retired South Norfolk engineer.

“Generally speaking, after the train passes the detector, it will tell you that no problems have been found,” said Scott Wilcox.

The NTSB received the train data recorder and audio recordings. They are analyzed at the NTSB laboratory in Washington, DC. The agency also checks that all detectors are working properly.

Preliminary findings are expected to be published within 30 days.
