Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to attend Tyre Nichols’ funeral.

January 31 (UPI) — Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to attend Tyre Nichols’ funeral in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday.

Harris Press Secretary Kirsten Allen Vice President told reporters on Tuesday will fly to Memphis for the funeral, saying the decision was made after a half-hour phone call with the Nichols family, who extended the invitation to the vice president.

At Wednesday’s funeral, Reverend Al Shaproton will give a panegyric, while Breonna Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer will also be present. George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd is also expected to be there.

Both Breonna Taylor and George Floyd were killed by police in high-profile cases, leading to nationwide protests.

Nichols was pulled over at a bus stop on January 7 and beaten by members of the Memphis Police Department, resulting in him being hospitalized. He died three days later.

Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released an official cause of death.

The department has since fired seven officers, five of whom are charged with second-degree murder. Later, the department finally disbanded the specialized unit, which included officers. Five police officers were released on bail.

Two paramedics and one Memphis fire officer present after Nichols’s arrest were initially suspended for failing to adequately assess the patient’s condition. All three were later fired.
