Up in the air: Garcia’s John Lautner-designed Los Angeles home is up for sale for $16 million

The iconic mid-century modern home with a parabolic roof is up for sale for the first time in decades.

Garcia’s house on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles soars 60 feet and seems to float among the trees.

This residence may be familiar to some as it was featured on the big screen in the 1989 movie Lethal Weapon 2.

“It was designed by the world famous architect John Lautner“, speaks Weston Littlefieldwhich puts the property on a joint listing with Aaron Kirman And Dalton Gomezall with AKGRE.

Lautner-designed homes rarely hit the market because their owners aren’t often interested in parting with them, Littlefield notes.

The famed architect built this 2,596-square-foot home in 1962 for a music composer and arranger. Russell Garciaand his wife, Gina.

Because of the house’s arched shape and colorful stained glass windows, it is also called the Rainbow House.

“One of his most famous designs”

“The Garcia house is considered one of his most famous projects,” says Littlefield. “The shape of the house is not the typical house shape you would expect. He is unique and way ahead of his time.”

The house fell into disrepair until a Broadway producer Bill Damaskand entertainment business manager, John McIlveybought the house in 2002 for $1,200,000 and extensively renovated it.

The result is a magnificent three-bedroom, three-bath home that still rises off the ground on V-shaped coffers, has a lava stone entrance, original terrazzo flooring, and a 55-foot wall of windows.

architectural firm Marmol Radziner oversaw a renovation that focused on preserving both architectural detail and function. A swimming pool was added to the property, which the original owners planned but never built.

“My favorite thing about the house is when you sit by the pool at sunset and look around the house,” says Littlefield. “This is such a work of art. The light changes when it enters the house and changes color.”

He says the two sellers of the house have lived in it for the last 20+ years.

“They experienced the time of their lives; and they said this house changed their lives because of the people they met and connected with, just because of the creative aspect of the house,” explains Littlefield. “So they feel like it’s time to pass the baton to someone else who appreciates the home and sees its value.”

Littlefield says many billionaires have already shown interest in the house, which is understandable given the price.

“Many of them would use it as a place to entertain clients and friends,” he says. “Some have mentioned that this was a small bachelor apartment for them. We’ve had people mention that this is a potential office. Then others mentioned that they would just assemble it, store it, and just use it here and there.”

And for someone with the means, this would certainly be a wonderful piece of art to add to the collection.

“When you buy this house, you buy it because you appreciate the architecture and you appreciate John Lautner,” Littlefield says. “It’s definitely like you’re buying a piece of art that… you can live in, have fun with, and actually use instead of just hanging on the wall.”

Demolition of a house

Design fans may remember how the house was dragged down the hill and “destroyed” in Lethal Weapon 2.

Don’t worry, it was just a copy. It is obvious that everything is in order in the present house; but the cinematic dwelling was used as a location for some shots.

Lautner designed over 200 projects, mostly houses, many of them in California. He died in 1994 at the age of 83.

His personal residence sold in 2020.
