University of Massachusetts expresses alarm over TikTok consumption trend after nearly 30 students admitted to hospital

The University of Massachusetts is sounding the alarm about a TikTok consumption trend after nearly 30 college students were reportedly rushed to the hospital at off-campus parties ahead of St. Patrick’s Day.

I said that on Saturday, students were seen carrying jugs of a mixture of alcohol, electrolytes, flavors, and water, dubbed “blackout rage gallons” or “BORGs.” officials.

Reports say 28 ambulances were called to the off-campus parties. There were so many ambulance calls for students suffering from alcohol intoxication that nearby institutions stepped in to help, officials said.

The Amherst Fire Department said none of the cases were life-threatening. UMass officials said this is the first time the university has seen widespread use of BORG at off-campus parties.

WHAT IS “BORG”? TIKTOK TREND GEN Z BECOMES A FIXED POINT TO PREVENT THE DANGER OF DRINKING

Amherst Police and Massachusetts Police reported two arrests for underage drinking, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette. According to the publication, the hashtag #borg has gained more than 74.7 million views on TikTok. He has been featured on the Chinese social media platform since at least 2020.

Poison Control says “BORG,” which is an enclosed container carried by individual students at parties, has been praised by some for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and reducing the amount of drinks added.

As the trend includes personalizing the drink with electrolytes, some believe it reduces hangovers.

However, BORGs, which typically contain a fifth of vodka, can still cause alcohol poisoning even when consumed for several hours, experts warn.

The university said in a statement that the events of the weekend will be evaluated and steps will be taken to improve alcohol education. Incoming students are already aware of the physiological and medical risks of heavy drinking.
