Memphis, Tennessee – On Friday night, the Memphis Police Department released disturbing footage showing Tyre Nichols being brutally beaten as Memphis and other major U.S. cities brace for protests and civil unrest.

Videos of the violence from body and stationary police cameras were published on the department’s Vimeo page.

“You guys are really doing a lot right now,” Nichols is heard telling officers at the beginning of the videos, which were released in four parts. “I’m just trying to get home.”

The beating occurred during a bus stop in the Hickory Hill area of ​​Memphis on January 7th. Nichols, who was 29, died of his injuries three days later. Authorities said Nichols was pulled over by officers and charged with reckless driving, but Memphis Police Chief Serelyn J. Davis has since said the department found no evidence to support the reckless driving allegations.

Memphis officials and others with access to the video warned the public about the horrifying nature of the footage even before it was released on Friday.
