Two officers injured, suspect killed in shootout after traffic was stopped

Feb. 5 (UPI) — A man was killed in a shootout with police that broke out after he drew a firearm and shot and killed two officers who were trying to arrest him after stopping traffic early Sunday morning in southern Indiana.

The man, identified as 29-year-old Anthony Richmond of West Baden Springs, Indiana, died en route to the hospital.

Two officers received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and are expected to make a full recovery.

This was reported by the Indiana State Police. statement that Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Rhodes, a five-year police veteran, stopped a vehicle at 3:15 a.m. for an unspecified traffic violation in the 4800 block of SR 37 in Mitchell, a city located about 80 miles south of Indianapolis. .

A second sheriff’s deputy with his K9 partner and a Mitchell cop arrived to help with a traffic stop that “escalated” into a drug investigation after a dog showed drugs in a car after conducting an outdoor scent test, according to message.

Drugs were found during a search of the vehicle, and when officers attempted to handcuff Richmond, he attempted to flee the scene.

When the officers pursuing him attempted to physically restrain Richmond, he is accused of drawing a pistol and opening fire on the officers at point-blank range, hitting Rhoads twice and once on police officer Mitchell Christian Anderson.

Indiana State Police said at least one of the wounded officers returned fire, fatally wounding Richmond.

“The incident was filmed on officers’ body cameras, the recording is being studied by investigators,” the report says.

Both officers were flown by helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Rhodes was released from medical attention, and Anderson, a three-year veteran of the Mitchell Police Department, remained in hospital in a stable condition as of Sunday evening.
