Trump lawyer says ‘there will be no standoff in Mar-a-Lago’ if he is indicted in New York

Donald Trump’s lawyer says the former president will not refuse to turn himself in to authorities if he is indicted in the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation into a deal to silence money during his 2016 presidential race.

“There will be no confrontation with the Secret Service and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in Mar-a-Lago.” – Joe Tacopina. told The New York Daily News.

Tacopina said that Trump, whom he described as a survivor, would find a way to use any charges leveled against him to eventually help him politically.

“Most people would collapse under the weight of it,” he said. “He seems to be turning everything into a positive and everything into a boost for his campaign, so I’m sure this will just join the long list of things that people think no one can overcome, but he will.”

Tacopina’s comments come at a time when Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg appears close to deciding whether to charge Trump in his investigation into the silence payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to remain silent in front of presidential elections in 2016. election about an affair she says she had with Trump.

Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who testified before a grand jury in the inquiry earlier this week, pleaded guilty in 2018 to several charges, including violating campaign finance in connection with Daniels’ $130,000 payment. Cohen, who spent more than a year in prison, said he paid for it at Trump’s direction.

On Wednesday, Daniels met with Manhattan prosecutors leading the investigation.

Trump has admitted to refunding Cohen’s payment, but says it was unrelated to his campaign funds. The Trump Organization announced compensation to Cohen in legal costs.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheng criticized Bragg in a statement Thursday, saying Trump was “completely innocent.” He argued that the investigation was politically motivated and backfired on “massive” Democrats.

Trump was invited to appear in person before a grand jury in another sign of a pending decision on whether charges will be filed, but he declined to testify.
