Travel expert gives advice on how to deal with Southwest cancellation

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — With another day of Southwest flight cancellations at airports across the country, a travel expert says it might be time to reconsider booking with another airline.

From LAX to JFK and here at CVG, many travelers are left to figure out how they can get to their destination.

As of 1:30 pm on Wednesday, Southwest had canceled more than 2,500 flights, according to FlightAware.

After days of massive cancellations, Southwest Airline’s CEO apologizes to customers, but one CVG passenger says he doesn’t feel it compensates for the “Southwest Crisis.”

“People on the ground doing their jobs didn’t do anything wrong, but watching the CEO on the news say it’s not him but the COO’s fault is unacceptable to me,” said Kenneth Payne, who flies to Mexico.

So, what to do if you are stuck at the airport?

One travel expert says you should contact the US Department of Transportation to review the return policy.

“The U.S. Department of Transportation has been pretty clear on the rules for when you can get reimbursed for things like extra hotel nights, food, and even Uber to and from the airport,” explains Sean Cudahy, a travel reporter.

For those who may be sitting at home with an upcoming booking with Southwest, Cudahy says that if you can afford to book with another airline, now is the time to do so.

“If I had a Southwest trip booked at least until the weekend, I would be very wary of trying to continue this trip,” Kudahy explains. “I’m not sure you can expect the flight to take off at all at this point.”

Southwest had already canceled more than 2,300 flights on Thursday, including seven of eight flights scheduled to depart or arrive at CVG, FlightAware data shows.
