Total CFP hits a new high

The number of certified financial planners hit a new high last year of 95,137 as the CFP ranks became more diverse, the CFP Standards Board Inc. said Thursday.

In total, there were 95,137 CFPs as of December 31, which is 3.4% more than at the end of 2021.

Nearly 30% of new CFPs were women, an all-time high. The total number of female CFPs has grown to 22,446, up 4.4% from 2021 and representing 23.6% of all CFPs.

The board also touted an increase in diversity, with racially and ethnically diverse people accounting for nearly 15% of new CFPs last year.

He noted that the number of black CFPs rose by 8.8%; a total of 1,765 Black CFPs, as of December 31, represented 1.9% of all CFP professionals.

Asian or Pacific Islander CFPs rose 6.7% to 3,883 and now make up 4.1% of all CFPs. Hispanic CFPs rose 10.3% to 2,710 and now account for 2.9% of all CFPs.

“Increasing the number and diversity of CFP® professionals is one of the strategic priorities of the CFP Council, and we are especially pleased to see a record number of women, as well as professionals of different races and ethnicities, become CFP® certified in 2022.” This was stated by CFP Board CEO Kevin Keller.

The CFP Board also noted that new certifications are getting younger, with more than 55% of the 5,214 new CFPs last year under 35 years of age.
