Tornado causes ‘catastrophic’ damage near Houston

Jan. 24 (UPI) — The Houston area is assessing “catastrophic damage” after severe weather and a violent tornado hit the region Tuesday, injuring one person and destroying dozens of homes and businesses. Flash flooding of closed roads as crews work to restore power to 100,000 customers after the storm.

tornado hit 15 miles southeast of Houston in Pasadena and Deer Park on Tuesday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning for the Houston area for the first time.

An “extremely rare tornado warning” that poses “serious threat to life and catastrophic damage” has been available in Houston since 2016 but was first released on Tuesday. according to National Weather Service.

“In my 25 years here, this is probably the most damage I’ve seen,” said Pasadena Police Chief Josh Brugger. told reporters.

Schools in Deer Park and Pasadena were canceled for Wednesday, and Deer Park residents were urged to stay away from roads where there was severe flooding. TxDOT tweeted that the brigades were busy rescuing people from flooded roads.

The severe weather threat to Texas has ended as the storm moved east to Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado watch was active Tuesday night across much of south Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

“Many roads are blocked, power lines and poles are down, and homes and other structures are badly damaged, with debris covering much of this area,” the Beauregard County Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana said. said in a post as the storm moved east from the Houston area.
