  • The balloon was spotted earlier Saturday over South Carolina near the Atlantic Ocean.
  • An operation is currently underway to extract fragments of the balloon.

The US shot down a supposedly Chinese spy balloon over the Atlantic where the government could have taken its fragments.

The commander-in-chief on Saturday answered a reporter’s question about the hot air balloon and said, “We’ll take care of it.”

According to the Associated Press, the balloon was previously spotted over South Carolina as it was moving towards the Atlantic Ocean.

To prepare for attempts to shoot down the balloon, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed airspace over the Carolinas, including airports in Charleston, South Carolina, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, until approximately 2:45 p.m. local time. time on Saturday. The agency also diverted air travel from the region and notified travelers of delays due to restrictions.

The Coast Guard also asked sailors to stay away from the area due to U.S. military activity “posing a significant risk.”

According to the AP report, US officials were keen to get as many parts of the balloon as possible before some of them ended up sinking in the Atlantic. A US official said the portion under the balloon was about the size of two to three school buses, while the balloon itself was larger, which could create a significant debris field.

According to the report, Biden was tempted to deflate the balloon when briefed on the matter on Tuesday, but Pentagon officials cautioned against such a move, citing a risk to people on the ground.

China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the plane “hit US territory due to force majeure.”

“Under the influence of the westerly wind and with limited self-control capabilities, the airship seriously deviated from the intended route,” the ministry said.

“China regrets that the airship got lost in the United States due to force majeure. China will continue to keep in touch with the US to properly handle the unexpected situation,” he added.
