The US Environmental Protection Agency begins cleaning up the Nelson Knitting plant in Rockford, Illinois.

CHICAGO (January 30, 2023) – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began cleaning up the former knitting factory at 909 S. Main St., Rockford, Illinois. The Environmental Protection Agency expects cleanup of asbestos-contaminated trash and other hazardous waste to be completed by mid-March.

In July 2020, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency transferred the Nelson Knitting facility to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for cleanup due to the presence of asbestos. Access restrictions have limited the EPA’s ability to start cleanup so far. The city of Rockford condemned the construction; however, the intruders keep coming in. City officials and the Environmental Protection Agency found remnants of building materials and asbestos debris on the floor. People entering the building are exposed to this material and risk carrying the asbestos fibers off site on their clothing and shoes.

During the cleanup, the EPA will remove asbestos-containing materials from the site. Cleaning also includes:

  • Transportation and disposal of asbestos-contaminated waste at an approved facility.
  • Compliance with a safety plan, including air monitoring and dust control, to protect the health of workers and the public.
  • Removal of hazardous materials found inside the building, including lighting fixtures containing PCBs, lead-acid batteries, various chemicals, mercury switches and fluorescent lamps.

It is assumed that cleaning will take place only inside the building. After the EPA completes the cleanup, the Winnebago County Foundation will handle demolition and possible redevelopment.
