The Trump Superteam has filed an ethics complaint accusing Ron DeSantis of taking “personal financial gain” from his “lucrative book tour.”

  • Trump’s Make America Great Again SuperPAC has filed an ethics complaint against DeSantis supporters’ PAC.
  • The Trump team wants a Florida ethics commission to investigate whether DeSantis’ book tour was “illegal.”
  • This ethics complaint started a formal dispute between the Trump camp and DeSantis supporters.

New front lines have emerged in the struggle between supporters of former President Donald Trump and allies of his political protégé-turned-enemy Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Make America Great Again Inc., Trump’s superteam, filed a complaint with the Florida Ethics Commission on Wednesday.

MAGA Inc. asks the Florida Ethics Commission to investigate whether DeSantis’ “personally lucrative book tour” and the work of DeSantis supporters violate any laws. The draft complaint was received exclusively by NBC News.

In a complaint by MAGA Inc. accused DeSantis of extortion and receiving “millions of dollars in illegal gifts in violation of Florida ethics laws and the Florida Constitution.” He also accused DeSantis of benefiting from a “coordinated effort” that is “specifically designed to enable him to accept illegal campaign contributions and certain personal benefits as unethical gifts.”

MAGA Inc. claimed that DeSantis is funded by “an extensive network of political committees, non-profit organizations, and prominent political figures.” He also argued that these actions “are illegal because they serve his personal political goals, pursue his personal financial gain at the expense of Florida taxpayers, and are intended to influence his official decision to retire.”

The Trump PAC also accused DeSantis of running a “shadow presidential campaign.” The PAC requested that DeSantis be removed from office if he was found to have violated state ethics laws.

“The Make America Great Again Movement was created to stop career politicians who use public service to amass personal wealth and power,” MAGA Inc. told CNN Wednesday. “An investigation by the Florida Ethics Commission should be done as soon as possible.”

DeSantis was indeed on tour to promote his new book. However, it’s unclear whether DeSantis-affiliated supercomputing centers or the governor himself benefited financially from the tour beyond the royalties he would have received from selling his books.

Taryn Fenske, DeSantis’ spokeswoman, told NBC News that she is adding the MAGA Inc complaint “to the list of frivolous and politically motivated attacks.”

“It is inappropriate to use state ethics for party purposes,” Fenske said in an interview with NBC News.

The ethics complaint is a clear escalation of fighting from the Trump camp in its battle against DeSantis. DeSantis has yet to announce his candidacy for the presidency, but they are on track to clash over the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Trump has also stepped up his attacks on DeSantis. In the past four months, Trump has claimed that DeSantis cried in front of him for support in 2018 and called DeSantis “average” and “very disloyal.” In February, he wrote a slew of angry posts on Truth Social denouncing DeSantis, despite saying that thinking about new nasty nicknames for DeSantis is “very unimportant” to him.

DeSantis has so far refrained from insulting Trump. In November, he told people to “relax” about a possible GOP civil war between them.

Representatives from DeSantis, a Trump spokesman and a representative from MAGA Inc. did not immediately respond to Insider requests for comment after business hours.
