The influencer launched a newsletter after her TikTok engagement dropped. Here’s how she gained 25,000 subscribers in 4 months.

  • Carlin Green has applied for over 100 college scholarships and is now helping others do the same.
  • She has almost 1 million followers on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, but the number of views has dropped recently.
  • She created an email newsletter last year and explains how it helped increase her income.

Applying to college was a stressful time for Carlin Green because she had to apply for financial aid to afford expensive tuition. She has applied for over 100 scholarships and won 30 of them, helping her to graduate debt-free from the University of North Texas in 2021.

Her experience made her think about other high school and college students who struggled to fund their education. In 2017, she began uploading videos to YouTube with resources on how to pay for college, and expanded to Instagram later that year.

Green’s content took off in January 2021 when she started posting on TikTok. Her videos primarily resonated with Gen Zers who are stuck at home during the pandemic and looking for ways to afford undergraduate and graduate programs. Her audience relied on her to keep them informed about various scholarships, how to stay organized when applying for multiple jobs at once, and application deadlines.

Even though the 24-year-old from Texas eventually amassed almost 800,000 followers on TikTok, she began to notice a decline in activity on the platform last summer.

While some TikToker users have been trying to solve this problem by creating more SEO-optimized content, Green has been looking for another solution. She was tired of repurposing her content to fit various social media platforms and wanted her followers to be able to take full advantage of the resources she offered.

In September, she launched a free email newsletter and asked her audience on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok to check it out. She has amassed 25,000 followers in the last four months who have access to her exclusive financial aid resources.

“It’s a way to put your creative business on autopilot and make money even when you’re not working,” Greene told Insider.

The newsletter is a permanent place where creators can store all their own and sponsored content.

Since she began her career, Green has worked with brands such as Amazon, DoorDash, Walmart and CollegeBoard. She earned $48,500 from paid sponsorship in 2022, according to documentation verified by Insider.

While most of her money as a full-time creator is earned through brand deals, Greene said that income stream is unreliable in the long run — like with the college application process, it requires her to continually apply — and she was looking for more stable, “hands-off” ways to increase her net worth.

In May 2021, Green joined the Teachable platform, which helps creators sell online courses. She has made $20,750 since November selling courses on how to get a college scholarship.

It was Green’s contact at Teachable who suggested she explore the newsletter idea when she noticed in the summer of 2022 that interest in her TikTok videos had dwindled.

“I saw that the TikTok algorithm wasn’t promoting my content as much as it used to be, so I realized that I couldn’t depend on any social media platform to constantly promote my work,” she said. “I wanted to control my audience.”

She created a free email newsletter on Convert Kit, a website for creating email templates, and sent out the first iteration to subscribers in September 2022. She uses the platform’s scheduling feature to automatically send out her newsletter each month.

Green says it has helped increase her income by encouraging more of her followers to buy courses or sign up for other paid services she offers, such as essay writing and tuition scholarships.

“It has definitely helped raise awareness of my brand because subscribers are constantly reminded that I am there when they check their email,” she said. “Awareness equates to money in my book because they are now more likely to invest in paid services.”

Green believes that creators who are tired of switching between different social media apps should start sending out newsletters.

Green encourages other creators on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to look into the newsletters because it helped her build what she called a more permanent community. She said it’s easier to keep in touch with her subscribers through the newsletter as she can check her inbox for messages instead of replying to private messages and comments on all her social media.

“It helps to centralize the process of interacting with your community,” she said. “This, in turn, helps your content evolve because you get a better understanding of what your audience wants to see from you and what resources they need.”

She also believes that creators are tired of being told to diversify across platforms and believes that more people will start looking for central hubs to host their content. A newsletter is easier to create than a full website, she says, and can be sent out automatically.

“This is the future,” she said. “Many of my followers tell me they find it a lot easier to navigate than social media, so this should tell you everything you need to know.”
