According to official figures, a man died in a night fire in a house due to a lithium-ion battery in New York.

Firefighters were alerted to a fire at a three-story home in Elmhurst, Queens just after 11 p.m. Friday, according to the FDNY. The second and third floors of the house were on fire.

When firefighters managed to get into the house, they found a man on the second floor who had inhaled smoke. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he died, according to CBS New York.

Several other people were also injured. Three people were taken to Elmhurst Hospital with minor injuries, two people were taken to Harlem Hospital Center and one person was taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, according to the FDNY. The FDNY did not provide information about their conditions.

Four firefighters were also treated for minor injuries. The blaze took about 90 minutes to put out, according to the FDNY.

Officials did not say whether any of the wounded lived in the house or whether the deceased lived.

Saturday morning agency tweeted that the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery, but gave no details.

Failed lithium-ion batteries that power e-bikes, scooters, cell phones and more have caused many fires. Overheated or defective batteries can catch fire or even explode. according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In September 2022, FDNY officials said that at least 150 fires were started in New York that year by these devices.

“When (lithium-ion batteries) fail, they fail very unexpectedly and very badly. It’s almost like a blowtorch effect,” FDNY Fire Chief Marshal Daniel Flynn told CBS in New York.

NFPA Recommends never charge a lithium-ion battery overnight or leave the battery in the charger after it is fully charged. Batteries should be stored at room temperature, kept away from other flammable materials, and should not be charged under a pillow, on a bed, or on a sofa.
