The grand jury will consider the case of the execution of the father of the suspect on July 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois prosecutors told a judge Thursday they are presenting evidence to a grand jury for a possible indictment of the father of a man accused of killing seven people at a Fourth of July parade in suburban Chicago.

Robert Crimo Jr., 58, was arrested in December on seven counts of reckless conduct. He is accused of helping his son get a gun license years before the 2022 Highland Park shooting, though the then 19-year-old reportedly threatened violence.

One count of reckless conduct carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

Prosecutors told Judge George Strickland at a brief hearing Thursday in Lake County Court in Waukegan, north of Highland Park, that they are presenting evidence to a grand jury and expect a decision by mid-February. The date of the next trial is February 16.

Crimo, a longtime resident and prominent figure in Highland Park, was released after being arrested last month on $50,000 bail.

Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart said the charges against the father are based on him sponsoring his son’s December 2019 gun license application. a family member of “kill everyone” threats.

Authorities say the Illinois State Police reviewed the son’s application for a gun license and found no reason to deny him because he had no arrests, convictions, serious mental health issues, protection orders or other actions that could have disqualified him.

George M. Gomez, the father’s attorney in Chicago, called the allegations against his client “baseless and unprecedented.”

Legal experts say the parents or guardians of a accused shooter rarely file charges, in part because such charges are hard to prove.

In July, a grand jury indicted Crimo’s son, Robert Crimo III, with 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated battery, representing seven people killed and dozens injured in the attack. at the parade in Highland Park. .
