The first Republican presidential primaries will be held in August

The Republican National Committee will hold its first presidential primary in Milwaukee in August as the Republican Party waits for several candidates who have not yet announced their scores.

On Thursday, the NRC voted to host the debate in Wisconsin, which will also host the 2024 Republican National Convention, a spokesperson for The Post confirmed.

No other debates are scheduled and final criteria for participants have not been determined.

The announcement comes after only two Republicans who will hold the office have announced their candidacies: former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) are expected to join the race in the next few months. Each has kept quiet about their presidential ambitions, with Pence most recently telling a reporter, “I’ll keep you posted.”

Pence dealt a blow to his former boss on Wednesday when he told CNBC in an interview that there are “better choices” in the upcoming election than Trump.

“Our candidates who have been focused on the past, especially the reconsideration of the last election, have not fared well, including in areas where we should have done very well,” Pence said, apparently referring to many candidates. backed by Trump, who failed in the 2022 midterm elections. .

Haley also took a swing at the former president when she announced her 2024 run on Twitter last week.

“You must know this about me. I don’t tolerate bullies. And when you fight back, they hurt more if you wear heels,” she said in the video that launched her campaign.

Pompeo told CBS News in January that he would decide whether to run “in the next couple of months” and that Trump’s decision to run again does not affect his decision.

DeSantis, who has not yet announced his candidacy, is the only contender for victory in 2024 to have overtaken Trump in the polls, beating the former president by 5 points this week in a poll conducted in the state of Michigan, where the fight is underway.

GOP mega-donors are also flocking to Florida’s governor’s campaign, donating millions of dollars to a potential 2024 leader.

Members of the RNC weigh the promise of loyalty from each candidate, which would require them to support the eventual candidate, according to the New York Times.

Entrepreneur and writer Vivek Ramaswami, who made a splash with his 2021 book Woke, Inc. and Steve Laffey, former mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, also put forward their candidacies for president.

Advisers close to President Biden have expressed concern that he may no longer run, despite his many claims to the contrary.
