The city will install temporary solar lighting on the trail near Rainey Street by March 10.

Austin, Texas – The City of Austin plans to install temporary solar lighting on the trail near Rainey Street by Friday, March 10, the first day of the South by Southwest movement.

It comes later Relatives and friends of those who died or were seriously injured near the trail at Lady Bird Lake wrote to Austin city council members in February demanding change.

According to a memorandum from Austin Parks and Recreation, the city will install temporary lighting at four locations between the trailhead on Rainey Street and the boat dock near I-35 and East Avenue.

The memo says, “While solar lighting is an effective immediate response, the dense canopy limits opportunities for solar lighting,” so they will also install split rail fencing between the trail and lake shoreline. If they don’t do it by Friday, they’ll put up another barrier as a short-term fix.

PARD will also install signs and safety information signs on the territory.

The city also plans to continuously improve infrastructure in the area.

The Trail Conservancy (TTC) plans to launch the Trailhead Project on Rainy Street at the corner of Rainy Street and Cummings Street. The project will include signage, a kiosk, improved lighting, and other site improvements.

PARD will lead a project management team to develop a permanent infrastructure plan. They plan to review and recommend wired lighting options, camera installations, fencing options, signage, and installation of safety signs.

The plan is expected by June 2023.
