Teens who fired on coffin at Toledo funeral charged

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) — A Lucas County grand jury has indicted three teenagers accused of shooting at a casket at a funeral in Toledo.

According to court records, a grand jury indicted Keith Hobbs, Caveon Jones and Lupa Hernandez III on Thursday in connection with the 2021 coffin shooting near Life’s River Church on Upton. Just last month, a judge ordered that three teenagers be tried as adults.

Hobbs and Jones face nine felony charges with three years’ weapons. Hernandez faced nine counts of being an accessory to a felony with a three-year gun life.

Three people were injured when suspected gunmen fired dozens of shots into a crowd outside a church during a service for Lawrenzel Larell Taylor III in December 2021. Lucas County Attorney Andy Lastra told 13abc last month that officials don’t know why the coffin was the focus of the shooting.

“Keith Hobbs and Caveon Jones ran behind houses across the street from the church on Upton to the intersection at Mansfield and Upton Avenue, took position at the intersection and started shooting down the street on Upton at cars as they tried to leave,” Lastra said.

He says the people couldn’t back out.

“They were driving literally under a hail of bullets. In the first car in front was a six-year-old boy who is still scared to this day,” Lastra said.

Investigators say Hernandez never pulled the trigger.

“There is no evidence that Lupe Hernandez was the shooter. Our position is that if he hadn’t been in a stolen SUV from Oregon, pulled up to Start High School, picked up the two, and then went to the church, but with his direct involvement, this may not have happened. the prosecutor said.

The three teens, aged between 17 and 18, were released on $90,000 bail, placed under house arrest and ordered to wear ankle bracelets.
