Sununu on Trump’s possible arrest: ‘Democrats made a mistake’

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said on Sunday that the possible imminent arrest of former President Trump in an investigation into alleged silence payments during the 2016 presidential election evoked sympathy for the former president.

“I think that’s a lot of sympathy for the former president,” Sununu said of the possible arrest on CNN’s State of the Union program. The governor said some Republicans he spoke to who are not “big Trump supporters” expressed concern that the former president was “under attack.”

“I just think that not only the media, but many Democrats have misunderstood this in terms of building sympathy for the former president, and it really changes the paradigm drastically as we head into the 24th election,” Sununu said.

Trump, who is running again for president in 2024, said in a True social post on Saturday that he expected to be arrested on Tuesday for alleged silence payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election and urged his supporters to protest.

Sununu stressed on Sunday that this possible arrest is not related to the riots at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and suggested that there are other issues that should take precedence.

“There is a question about why they do it, something like seven years ago. It’s not nothing, but it’s the movement of money and the way he claimed the money moves between him and his lawyer. You know, there are other issues that really take precedence in terms of where this country should go, what we need to do to achieve the goal, how we manage our budget, how we secure the border,” Sununu said.

“There are much more pressing issues of the day. It’s just a shame it hit the headlines.”

Sununu said he was considering his own presidential bid for 2024, and while he did not confirm his campaign on Sunday, he said he would “love to be part of the debate if we really go down that path.”
