Spearmint Energy buys trio of 900MW batteries in Texas

US renewable energy developer Spearmint Energy said today it has bought three 900 MW/2000 MWh battery storage projects to be built in Texas to serve the ERCOT electricity market.

The so-called Nomadic portfolio includes three projects up to 300 MW each, located in Cook, Galveston and Brazoria counties. The new project owner expects to reach the stage of notification of the start of work on the first of them at the beginning of next year and launch the system within 12-18 months.

Spearmint noted that the ERCOT electricity market is seeing strong growth in demand for renewables following the winter storm Uri and the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

The company was founded by its current president and CEO, Andrew Varanch, in May 2022, and a couple of months later acquired the Revolution 150MW/300MWh energy storage project in West Texas. Revolution entered the construction phase in November 2022.
