Speaking Plans, STEM Schools Concern Akron Parents

ACRON, Ohio (WJW) — There was only standing room at a special Akron Public Schools Board meeting Monday night as the school district reviewed a plan for new facilities.

Parents have expressed their concerns to the school board, especially with Miller’s Southern School of Visual and Performing Arts and STEM High School.

“One of the reasons for the uproar is the idea not to move, but to exclude the fourth and fifth grades from the program,” said parent Stephanie Cook.

Cook fears that Miller South will only have grades 6 to 8 if and when he is relocated.

Cutting grades 4 and 5 at Miller South is part of one of five options the school board is currently considering.

According to Chief Operating Officer Stephen Thompson, most of the district’s schools are experiencing a decline in enrollment.

“In fourth and fifth grade, you have the opportunity to test all your options. So you can add something in 6th grade, which is why 4th and 5th grade are so special,” said student Fiona Cook.

All plans include relocating Miller South, STEM, and Pfeiffer Elementary School, as well as building an athletic facility on the former Kent High School campus.

Some plans will also cost millions of dollars. This is something else the board needs to consider before making a decision next week.
