Space Force chief to testify before Senate Armed Services committee on $30 billion budget proposal

March 14 (UPI) — U.S. Chief of Space Operations General Chance Saltzman will testify before a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday, a day after the Space Force unveiled its $30 billion budget.

Saltzman scheduled give evidence to the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces at 4:45 pm EST.

The Space Force’s fiscal year 2024 budget request is 13 percent higher than last year and includes $19 billion in funding for satellite, ground systems and assistive technology development.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, who oversees both services, said For defense technology news site C4ISR, the funding gives the Space Force options as it considers how to make its satellites more resilient to threats in space.

“If we don’t make these investments, we won’t even have a chance to think about these things,” he said at a briefing ahead of the budget release. “Everything that we are trying to do here to move to the capabilities of the next generation is mainly determined by the pace of development [People’s Republic of China].”

The budget also includes $2.3 billion to fund the Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking program, which uses satellites to track ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

United States far and wide world leader spends on space programs, and the 2022 budget is $61.97 billion, more than the rest of the world combined. NASA will receive $27.2 billion in fiscal year 2024.

“The budget details a plan for economic growth from the bottom up and from the middle to the center,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement.

“At NASA, we support well-paying jobs in America, spark the imagination, and encourage the world to look to the heavens and reflect on our place in the universe.”
