Shooting on Li summit injures 18-year-old, nearest hospital closed

Lee’s Summit Hospital was closed Friday night after an 18-year-old was shot several times nearby.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Summit Lee Police Department officers responded to a call for shootings on the streets of Northeast Douglas and Northeast Mulberry, near the campus of St. Luke’s East Hospital.

Police then determined that an 18-year-old man was sitting in the passenger seat of a car at an intersection when another car pulled up next to him. The other driver then pulled out a gun and started shooting at the victim, police said in a statement.

The driver of the victim’s car was able to quickly go to the hospital for medical help. The 18-year-old is now in a stable condition, according to Carmen Spet, spokeswoman for the police department.

Initial conflicting reports about the suspect’s whereabouts resulted in East St. Luke being temporarily locked down. However, police later determined that the suspect fled the scene.

Police did not provide any details of the incident, including a description of the suspect’s car.

According to police, it is not clear whether the suspect and the victim knew each other.

St. Luke’s East did not immediately respond to The Star’s request for comment on Saturday.
