Schiff announces he is running for the California Senate in 2024

Washington. Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff announced Thursday that he is running for the Senate from California in 2024, becoming the second Democrat to officially enter the fast-growing race to replace Senator Dianne Feinstein, who has yet to say whether she will run. for re-election.

“We are fighting for life, for the future of our country. Our democracy is under attack from MAGA extremists who only care about taking power and keeping it. And our economy is simply not working for the millions of Americans who are working harder than ever just to survive,” Schiff said in a statement. “And at this moment, we need a champion for our democracy and our families, so I’m starting my campaign to be the next U.S. Senator from California.”

Schiff, who was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in the last Congress and led the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump, is joining Democratic Rep. Kathy Porter in the race. Another Democrat, Rep. Barbara Lee, told her colleagues that she intends to run.

Feinstein, 89, has been in the Senate since 1992 and has not disclosed her plans for the future, despite calls from other Democrats for her to step down. Earlier this month, she said in a statement that “everyone can of course throw their hat into the ring and I will make an announcement about my plans for 2024 at the appropriate time.”

Schiff Fox 11 said in Los Angeles on Thursday that he informed Feinstein of his plans to run before his announcement and said she was “more than pleased with my announcement. I wouldn’t do it without such a blessing.”

California has a so-called jungle primary system in which candidates from all parties compete in the primary and then the top two candidates go to the general election, regardless of their party.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy earlier this week denied Schiff a seat on the intelligence committee in the new Republican-controlled Congress. Schiff, who has long been one of Trump’s main antagonists, accused McCarthy of getting back at him for his role in Trump’s impeachment, saying he believed he was denied a seat because he “headed the impeachment of his master.” in Mar-a-Lago. “
