San Quentin prison captain arrested for sexually abusing an unconscious man

Authorities said a captain at California’s San Quentin State Prison was arrested last week in connection with an investigation into the sexual assault of an unconscious man.

Orlando Ponce, 43, was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of forcibly entering the body of an unconscious man, according to a press release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives were able to find a possible reason for the arrest after the victim made a statement on January 30, the sheriff’s office said.

The alleged attack took place in the village of San Quentin, adjacent to the prison, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. This was announced by Brenton Schneider in an email on Tuesday.

The court records of the Ponce case in the Marin County Supreme Court Public Index were not immediately available online. According to prisoner records, he was jailed on $100,000 bail, but is no longer in custody.

The phone number listed for Ponce was disabled and an attempt to reach him via email on Monday failed. It is not clear if he hired a lawyer.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported that Ponce has been with their office since 2001, when he was a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center. He was promoted to captain on 1 July 2021 after a six-month limited captaincy earlier that year.
