Salary range disclosure backfires after government pressure
Some of the job postings, which have come amid California’s push for pay transparency, have a fairly wide range of compensation..
The Pay Transparency Act, formerly known as SB 1162, went into effect with the start of the new year. It requires employers with 15 or more employees to “include the pay scale for the position in any job posting.” When such an employer works with a third party to “announce, publish, publicize or otherwise make known a job posting”, they must also disclose the salary range in the listings, according to the text of the law.
The California Department of Industrial Relations said the regulation covers job postings “if the position can ever be filled in California, in person or remotely.” The pay scale must “mean the range of wages or hourly wages that the employer reasonably expects to pay” someone for the role, and need not include bonuses, tips, or other benefits. according to Department.
