Republican in House of Representatives says it’s ‘unfortunate’ that Democrats are ‘frightening’ older people with talk of cutting Social Security, Medicare

Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) criticized Democrats for trying to “scare” the elderly, saying Republicans want to cut welfare and medical care costs. cost reduction.

“It’s very disappointing that the President and Chuck Schumer continue to try to bully older people,” Comer said Sunday on ABC’s This Week. “These are important programs for everyone.”

Potential cuts to programs like Social Security and Medicare have surfaced as Republicans and Democrats clashed over the debt limit. Lawmakers are due to increase the country’s borrowing limit by June, but Republicans are pushing the Biden administration to agree to cut spending before striking a debt ceiling deal.

Democrats, however, are unwilling to back down from their demand for a higher debt ceiling without the guarantee of spending cuts. Instead, President Biden and Democrats have lashed out at Republicans for proposing to cut spending on Social Security and Medicare.

However, the leadership of the Republican Party strongly rejected this idea. With Democrats hammering Republicans on the issue of Social Security and Medicare, GOP lawmakers have yet to put forward the spending cut plan they want.

“We’ll come up with a plan,” Comer said without elaborating. “We are still discussing this plan. There are heated debates at our conference.”

Comer made a commitment not to touch Social Security or Medicare in the GOP’s plan to cut costs.

“We’re not going to cut Social Security or Medicare,” Comer said. “We’ve been very clear on this… at any rate, we need to test these programs. They’re running out of money.”
