Queen Latifah to attend NAACP Image Awards

The host of the 54th NAACP Image Awards was shown live on CBS Mornings on Tuesday. Queen Latifah, actress and musician, winner of Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe awards, will hold the ceremony on Saturday, February 25.

The awards honor black performers in film, television, theatre, music and literature.

“I am honored to host the 54th NAACP Image Awards, especially as we celebrate 50 years of hip-hop,” Queen Latifah said in a press release. “This is a night to celebrate black supremacy and their contribution to our industry and beyond. Celebrating each other, cheering each other on, and you know we’ll have fun!”

Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy, called Queen Latifah “one of the most influential and iconic voices of our generation” and “a groundbreaking megastar”.

Queen Latifah will not be the only celebrity of the evening. The hosts will be Janelle Monáe, Taye Diggs, Kerry Washington, Jonathan Majors and Zendaya.

The awards also celebrate the achievements of political leaders and activists. According to a press release, the Activist of the Year award will go to Dr. Derrick Lee Foward, President of the Dayton Chapter of the NAACP and Vice President of the Ohio State NAACP. Foward worked with the NAACP for almost two decades.

The Young Activist of the Year Award will go to Bradley Ross Jackson, President of the NAACP Youth Council in Bloomington, Indiana. Jackson will be awarded for organizing a peaceful protest with more than 1,000 people in response to the killing of George Floyd.

Notable names including Democratic Congressman Benny G. Thompson of Mississippi, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, former basketball star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union-Wade will also receive awards.

“This year’s NAACP Image Awards will be a remarkable celebration that celebrates the major achievements of political leaders, artists, activists and other agents of change,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, in a press release. “It will also be an evening that shows how our community can come together and positively impact each other and the world.”

The awards ceremony will premiere live on BET and simulcast on Paramount Global networks including BET HER, CBS, CMT, Comedy Central, LOGO, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, POP TV, Smithsonian, TV Land and VH1.
