Prince Harry and Meghan’s children to receive royal titles after Lilibet’s baptism

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex named their daughter “Princess Lilibet” at her christening last week, indicating for the first time that their two children will be publicly known by their royal titles.

Princess Lilibet Diana was baptized on Friday by the Reverend John Taylor of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan confirmed on Wednesday. Her title, along with that of Prince Archie’s older brother, is expected to be updated on the royal family’s website.

In June, the young princess will turn 2 years old, and this spring Archie will turn 4 years old.

There has been some speculation as to whether Princes Harry and Meghan will use royal titles for their children after stepping down as senior members of the royal family. This decision meant that they would no longer use the titles of “royal highness” and would stop receiving public funds.

During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, a year after retiring from public roles, Meghan said there was some debate in the family about whether their son Archie would be called a prince. She indicated that the decision was made by a royal institution and not by her or her husband.

“They didn’t want him to be a prince or a princess … which was different from protocol and that he wasn’t going to get security,” Meghan said. “It was really hard… It went on during the last few months of our pregnancy… I was very afraid that I would have to give up our baby, knowing that he could not be saved.”

She told Winfrey at the time that her only thought was that her son, whatever his title, “should be safe”.

The children’s grandfather, King Charles, is due to be formally crowned on the throne in May. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibeth Diana are sixth and seventh in line to the throne.
