Pilot Point mayor Matthew McIlravy resigns after he was accused of online solicitation of a child under the age of 14 and arrested earlier this week

Pilot Point, Texas – As we already reported earlier this week, the 42-year-old Pilot Point mayor, Matthew McIlravy, was arrested and charged with a second-degree felony Tuesday, accused of online solicitation of a child under the age of 14.

McIlravy, who just started his three-year term in May, submitted his resignation and the city council accepted it Thursday night.

Per the local authorities, the arrest came following a five-month long operation targeting online sex criminals. According to the Dallas Police Department, the months-long operation was conducted by the Collin County DA’s office, U.S. marshals and the Dallas PD.

McIlravy was jailed on Tuesday, but he posted bond shortly after. Dallas police said they believe McIlravy has been in communication with additional minors, but no more details for these cases were immediately available.

The Thursday’s Pilot Point city council meeting, when McIlravy’s resignation was accepted, was conducted by the Mayor Pro Tem Chad Major. Major read a statement saying he will assume duties of mayor after receiving McIlravy’s resignation letter. The council will address the vacancy at a later date.
