Philadelphia cop critically injured in shooting

Authorities said Wednesday that a Philadelphia police officer was critically injured while investigating the vehicle and two suspects are wanted.

Officials said the officer received at least two shots shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in West Philadelphia and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said one officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle and a fight ensued with the passenger, who opened fire, hitting the officer in the stomach just under his vest.

Police said another officer returned fire and both suspects fled. Another officer took his partner to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Stanford said one bullet went in and out, and medical personnel were trying to determine how much damage a second bullet might have done.

Stanford said the 32-year-old officer who was shot has been with the police for five years. Police said a description of the suspects was not immediately available, but officials were checking videos from body-worn cameras. Officials believed they had located the affected vehicle but were working to confirm this.

Stanford asked anyone with information to call investigators, saying, “The fact that you’re shooting at a cop doing his job is irrelevant to life,” he said. “We are trying to apprehend these people as quickly as possible.”

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenny called police work “very dangerous and difficult work done by very brave people.”

“They go out every day trying to keep us safe by putting their lives and health in danger, and we cannot repay them for such work,” Kenny said.
