Pence says Biden briefing on downed air targets ‘too late’

Former Vice President Pence criticized President Biden’s briefing on the targets the US has shot down over the past couple of weeks, saying the president’s explanation on Thursday was “too small and too late.”

“I would characterize today’s press conference by the President as too short and too late,” Pence said on Fox News. “I mean, the president’s addressing this issue two weeks after it got the country’s attention with the first hot air balloon is simply unacceptable.”

In a White House commentary, Biden said the three objects dropped from the sky over the weekend were believed to have belonged to private companies. Aerial targets were shot down by a suspected Chinese spy balloon that was shot down off the coast of South Carolina earlier this month.

“According to the intelligence community’s current assessment, these three sites were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreational or research institutions that study the weather or conduct scientific research,” Biden said.

The president’s remarks came after Republicans pressured the administration to provide more information about the facilities, criticizing the White House for what they called a lack of transparency.

Outrage over Biden’s handling of the situation has only grown since it was first revealed earlier this month that a balloon belonging to China had flown over the US before Biden ordered it shot down.

“Why the hell did you let this thing drive across the entire continental United States before you shoot it down?” Pence said. “This thing should have been shot down as soon as it entered our airspace in Alaska.”

Pence also dismissed the idea that such balloons flew over the US during the Trump-Pence administration, an argument advanced by defense and intelligence officials in the Biden administration.

“I think there were rumors about it during our reign … of course it never happened,” Pence said. “I think you invaded the airspace of the United States of America during our reign, we would be in the situation room.”
