Pelosi will support Schiff’s candidacy for the US Senate, but only if Feinstein resigns

Feb. 2 (UPI) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her support for fellow Democrat Adam Schiff in the 2024 California Senate race, but has made it clear she will switch to Dianne Feinstein if the aging senator decides to run for a seventh term.

Pelosi, who served twice as Speaker of the House of Representatives before resigning earlier this year due to the Republican takeover, touted Schiff’s legal integrity as well as his financial acumen, as well as referring to “his service in the House of Representatives, [where] he focused on strengthening our democracy through justice and building an economy that works for everyone.”

“Since I supported Adam in his 2000 Congressional race, I have known his commitment to making the American Dream a reality for everyone,” Pelosi said in a statement released by the Schiff campaign. “Adam dedicated his life to public service. Every time I asked Adam to fight hard against extremist forces, he answered honestly, decisively and successfully.”

Schiff tweeted that it is “a great honor and pride” for him to have the support of Pelosi, whom he called a “friend and mentor.”

“She has done so much for children and working families and deeply understands the challenges facing our democracy,” he wrote.

Pelosi, however, said her “with all my heart” support will remain with Feinstein if she decides to remain in her post.

Pelosi praised Feinstein’s 31 years of public service in the Senate, which began in 1992 after she won a special election to take Senator Gray Davis’s seat when he became governor of California.

At 89, Feinstein is now the oldest sitting senator, and in 2022, she became the longest-serving female senator in the nation’s history.

Her legislative track record includes numerous historic triumphs, including the passage of the Violence Against Women Act and the Respect for Marriage Act. She is also hailed for her position as the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Feinstein, who was last elected in 2018 and is due to turn 90 in June, has yet to announce whether she will retire or run for another six-year term. She previously indicated that she would likely make a final decision about her future this spring.

Several California Democrats are already lining up to enter the upcoming primary race to replace her. The most notable of these is Schiff, who launched his campaign last Thursday, while Rep. Kathy Porter threw down her hat more than three weeks ago.

Rep. Barbara Lee has also reportedly expressed interest in the bid for the seat, and some believe Rep. Ro Khanna may also make an announcement in the coming weeks.
