Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg felt guilty after a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Five years after he survived the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, David Hogg said he felt guilty after the mass shooting in Uvalda, Texas in May 2022. Sunday morning” that nothing has changed.

On February 14, 2018, a 19-year-old gunman entered a Parkland, Florida high school, killing 17 people and injuring 17 more. Hogg and a group of fellow students then banded together to demand tougher gun laws. As a result of their efforts, the age to purchase guns in Florida has been raised to 21. The students also formed an advocacy group March for our liveswhere Hogg is on the board of directors.

But despite their work, five years later, mass executions continue.

“It’s a lot of guilt,” Hogg said when Braver asked how he felt after the Uvalda shooting. “We walked out and literally said, ‘Never again. Yes, obviously it didn’t work. Unfortunately”.

In an extensive interview on his life as the fifth anniversary of the shooting approaches, Hogg talks about the death threats he received from gun rights advocates; his student life at Harvard; his problems with post-traumatic stress disorder; and the work he and his surviving comrades have done to stop the violence.

“Yeah, it’s incredibly inspiring that we got up,” Hogg said. “But young people should stand up and not die in their classrooms – a bad sign. This is as good a sign as a canary passed out in a coal mine for our democracy.”
