Olivia Pichardo became the first woman to play in an NCAA Division I baseball game.

Brown freshman Olivia Pichardo became the first woman to appear in a Division I baseball game when she lost 10-1 to Bryant on Friday.

left-handed utility from Queens, New York, busted with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to take first on first field at Murray Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island.

Pichardo was an outfielder and pitcher for the US women’s national baseball team, which won three of five games against Canada last summer. She moved to Brown in the fall and was told by coach Grant Achilles that she had earned a place in the roster in November.

Pichardo played clubball in the New York area and interned with the New York Mets’ amateur scouting division last year. She played basketball and volleyball at Garden School before attending Brown.

About half a dozen women are known to have played baseball in junior colleges or four-year junior high schools. NCAA said on her website, Pichardo is one of eight women on the collegiate baseball roster this season, but she is the only one to play at the Division 1 level.
