Ohio uses program to help older drivers stay safe on the road

COLUMBUS, Ohio. People aged 65 and over make up the fastest growing segment of drivers in the nation and in Ohio.

According to the Ohio Highway Traffic Safety Administration, by 2030 the state will have more than 4.8 million residents aged 65 and over.

In an effort to keep more older drivers on the road and keep them safe, Ohio is using federal funds to support a program called Car-Fit.

“Many people do not know what it is, do not understand it. This should help reduce risk while driving and reduce your risk if you get into an accident,” said Kimberly Schwind, assistant director and administrator of training programs. For Ohio Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Delaware County is one of the few places in the state that uses Car-Fit. Local health department officials are conducting tests by taking drivers through various checkpoints in their car.

The program is designed as a refresher course for older drivers. He teaches them not only how to be safe on the road, but also how to be safe in the car.

“We teach them how to properly fasten their seat belt, the distance to the steering wheel can make a big difference if you have an accident with an airbag deployed, head restraint position… we are working on minimizing blind spots. Schwind said.

ODOT data shows that the number of deaths involving older drivers reached a 10-year high in 2021, with 299 people killed in crashes on Ohio’s highways, accounting for 22% of all traffic deaths in the state. The death rate among older drivers has been on the rise since the pandemic as drivers return to normal activities. Preliminary data for 2022 shows that 293 elderly drivers were killed on Ohio’s roads last year. Slightly lower than in 2021, but still higher than in recent years (2017-2021).

As Ohio drivers continue to age, the state is working on a five-year plan to continue allowing older drivers to be mobile when driving is not an option.
