Ohio to reopen clinic amid growing train derailment fears

The Ohio Department of Health on Tuesday opens a clinic in East Palestine to address growing health concerns among residents after a train derailment prompted South Norfolk officials to release and burn a toxic chemical in the area to avoid an explosion.

The department said in a press release on Sunday that the clinic will be opened in partnership with the D.C. Department of Health and with support from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

It said the clinic, which will open at noon, will be accessible to East Palestinians “who have medical questions or concerns related to the recent train derailment.”

It comes after the state’s attorney general said he plans to sue Norfolk Southern after a 150-car train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed on February 3.

In a notice of intent to sue, addressed to Alan Shaw, president and CEO of Norfolk Southern, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said his office is considering litigation over the crash.

“After the Norfolk Southern train derailed, the company caused the release of hazardous materials into the air, land, surface and ground water in and around Eastern Palestine,” Yost said in a February 15 letter.

“The pollution that continues to contaminate the area around East Palestine has created inconvenience, damaged natural resources and damaged the environment. As a result, local residents and Ohio waters suffered,” he said.

In his notice, Yost also noted that Norfolk Southern is required by law to retain “all information potentially relevant to pending litigation.” He specifically noted that records of all current and former employees of Norfolk Southern and its contractors relating to derailments, pollution and the causes of pollution must be kept.
