Ohio Senator: East Palestine entitled to skepticism after train derailment

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) on Sunday said East Palestine, Ohio residents are “rightly skeptical” after a catastrophic train derailment released toxic chemicals into the air, land and water near their homes.

“Should residents accept government assurances or are they right in their skepticism?” host Pamela Brown asked the senator on CNN’s State of the Union.

“Well, they are right when they doubt. The EPA administration, when I was there, both state and federal EPA administrators said this. But when you get home we think the water is safe, but when you get home you should test your water, your soil and your air again,” the senator said.

A 150-car train derailed in eastern Palestine earlier this month, setting fires at a crowded place and leaking chemicals from one of several cars carrying hazardous materials, including the cancer-causing chemical vinyl chloride.

Neighboring residents were evacuated due to fears of a potential explosion as officials conducted a controlled release to try to reduce the danger, and although evacuation orders have since been lifted, toxic substances have leaked into the nearby air and water, causing environmental problems. and health.

“You would drink water in East Palestine, and don’t you think that officials there who say it’s safe should also drink water to show the people that they drink it?” Pamela Brown asked the senator on Sunday.

“Well, I think they are. I spoke to the mayor. The mayor said decisively, decisively, people can drink water,” he replied.

“It’s really the same old story. Corporations buy back shares. They do big dividend checks. They fire workers. Thousands of workers were fired from Norfolk Southern. Then they don’t invest in health and safety regulations and it happens,” the senator added.
