Officials say a New York mother who works with victims of abuse was hit by an SUV driven by her estranged husband, who then stabbed her in front of her children.

A New York City woman who works with victims of abuse after experiencing her toxic marriage was seriously injured after her estranged husband allegedly mowed her down in front of their three children, officials said.

Sophia Giraldo, 41, is hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Queens after she was hit by an SUV on Tuesday. The criminal complaint alleges that her husband, Steven Giraldo, hit her with his car and then stabbed her.

Three of their boys, aged 11, 9 and 6, were in the SUV at the time but were not injured.

The complaint says the 11-year-old boy told authorities that he saw his mother walking on the sidewalk in front of the SUV. According to the complaint, Steven Giraldo made a comment like “fasten your seatbelt” before entering Sofia, the boy said.

The police reported NBC New York that Stephen Giraldo was allegedly waiting in a car outside Sophia Flushing’s apartment building.

CCTV footage obtained by the news station captured the horrific incident and showed Sophia leaving her building around 5:15 am. The SUV hit her with such force that it rolled onto its side, as shown in the video.

The released footage does not show what happened next, but the criminal complaint alleges that Steven Giraldo climbed out of the passenger side window after the crash and stabbed Sophia. Police found a bloody knife near her body, the complaint said.

Sophia suffered brain damage, leg fractures, and a stab wound that pierced her liver. The NYPD said she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Steven Giraldo was arraigned Wednesday on charges of attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. It is not known if he received a lawyer.

“The brutality of the attack, and the fact that it was carried out in front of the victim’s three young children, brings grief and outrage to all of us,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a press release Wednesday. “My thoughts are with the children.”
