NYT’s Maggie Haberman says Trump’s age and campaign finances make it difficult for him to hold more rallies and he may “include an indictment” in his 2024 message.

  • Maggie Haberman has suggested that President Trump may be holding fewer rallies due to his age and relatively little campaign money.
  • Haberman noted that Trump received less media attention and raised less money than previous campaigns.
  • If he is indicted, Trump could include it in his campaign, a reporter for The New York Times predicted.

Donald Trump’s age and financial situation may prevent him from holding more campaign rallies than his previous presidential campaigns, New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman suggested.

Haberman, a senior political correspondent who has covered Trump extensively over the past few years, compared the former president’s 2024 election to his previous campaigns on ABC News Sunday’s This Week when asked if Trump is running a “real campaign” “.

“He has serious people leading this campaign. There is a difference in how it is organized from 2016 to the present,” Haberman replied. “We saw someone who got attention in 2015 because he was in all these rallies and he seemed very conspicuous and everywhere.”

Trump was “ubiquitous” in the media in the 2016 election, but “he’s gone now,” Haberman said. He launched his 2024 campaign a few months ago in November, but Haberman said his Saturday speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference was “only the fourth real event.”

“He doesn’t appear on Fox very often, although his speech was broadcast live yesterday,” Haberman said. “And it’s a huge contrast. I suspect that part of the reason we don’t see big rallies is, uh, his age. I mean, we talk a lot about Biden’s age. Donald Trump is not young.”

Trump is 76 and President Joe Biden is 80.

Haberman continued, “Secondly, I don’t think they have the money they once had for this campaign. These rallies are incredibly expensive. And so I think they’re trying to chase news cycles. They did it quite effectively. “

Trump has raised $9.5 million since his campaign announcement on Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, 2022, according to Bloomberg. By comparison, according to TIME, he raised $250 million between his defeat in the November 2020 presidential election and January 6, 2021.

At CPAC, Trump said he would not drop out of the presidential race if he was indicted. The former president is facing investigations in Georgia, New York, and two investigations by the federal government.

Indictment is a “very real possibility” in many jurisdictions, Haberman said, and people “really need to keep an eye on how he’s going to include an indictment” in his re-election bid.
