New York teenager dies while surfing subway train over Williamsburg Bridge

Police said a 15-year-old boy died while “subway surfing” on a train crossing the Williamsburg Bridge on Monday evening.

According to the NYPD, the teen was riding on the roof of a northbound J train heading over the bridge when he hit his head on a structure around 6:45 p.m.

He fell under a train and died at the scene.

The MTA stopped J and M trains between Marcy Av and Delancey St-Essex St for several hours while officers investigated. According to the agency, both trains were still running late after 23:00.

The identity of the victim is not released until the family is notified.

Several young teenagers were seriously injured or killed while surfing the subway last year as cases of dangerous behavior skyrocketed, in part due to social media, officials said over the summer.

From January to May 2022, subway surfing incidents increased by 560% to 449 incidents, compared with 68 incidents in the same period in 2021, according to MTA data.

In June, NYPD Transportation Chief Jason Wilcox called subway surfing “incredibly dangerous” and noted that young people were involved in most of the incidents.

“There [is] nothing funny or funny about this type of activity and we will continue to work to contain it,” he said at the time.

Several accidents involving a daredevil have occurred on the Williamsburg Bridge.

More recently, another 15-year-old boy died after falling off the roof of a J train and landing on an electrified third rail atop the Williamsburg Bridge in early December.

In August, a third 15-year-old boy lost his arm after falling off a northbound R train at the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue station in Jackson Heights while trying to climb onto the top of a train car to surf on the subway.

His arm was torn off below the elbow, and rescuers found the severed arm under the train.

Two months earlier, another 15-year-old boy suffered a serious head injury when he hit his head on the roof of a 7 train in Queens. He was found unconscious on the roof of a train car and taken to a district hospital in critical condition.

A year earlier, in October 2021, a 32-year-old man had died from a southbound J train near Essex Street station and Williamsburg Bridge. The terrified hangers said they witnessed the man “fall off the train and get hit by a car”.
